Legal Writing Coach: 1.5 Hour Workshops For Associates & Attorneys
Systematic Editing
The key to good writing is good editing. Yet few lawyers give themselves enough time to edit well. Even fewer use a system when they edit. In this workshop, participants will learn (1) how to leave more time for the edit and (2) a four-step approach for editing longer documents, each step bringing greater refinement.
Clear Structuring
“Is my structure easy for the reader to follow?” This workshop will help you answer “YES” to that question by posing three questions to always ask yourself about your structure: (1) Is it logical overall? (2) Did I put the conclusion first? (3) Have I used plenty of effective navigation aids?
Concise Style
This workshop offers an intensive treatment of style – the most common problem in legal writing. Lawyers (and clients) know poor style when they see it. The problem is how to fix it. Participants will learn the science behind transforming their style from “legalese” to plain English in two steps: (1) cut words/syllables and (2) simplify sentence structures.
Grammar & Vocabulary
This workshop offers an intensive treatment of legal usage (grammar, punctuation, vocabulary).
Participants take part in three short tests of their ability to spot the most common legal usage errors – from non-parallel constructions to mismatched prepositions to incorrect legal terminology. The workshop concludes with a simple way to avoid inconsistent usage – by far the most common usage mistake.
Professional Tone
In this workshop, participants will learn an easy technique for striking the right tone (i.e., formality) in legal correspondence. They will also learn how to communicate with clients in a personal and positive “glass-half-full” tone.
Effective Emails
Poor communication is the no. 1 client complaint about lawyers. Emails are easily the most common type of lawyer-client communication. This workshop offers several client-friendly email strategies, including how to structure using “ICRA,” avoid legal jargon, and close with clear next steps. The workshop concludes with email “do’s and don’ts.”
Contract Drafting
In this workshop for transactional lawyers, participants learn (1) a reasoning technique to map out and draft contract provisions that are clear, simple, and unambiguous and (2) how to spot and fix commonly litigated terms in contracts.
Persuasive Writing
Lawyers must often persuade in writing, be it in a website, a pleading, or a pitch. And in the fight to persuade, how you say it is often more important than what you say. In this workshop, participants receive tools for winning writing, including a punchy style, show, don’t tell, and a reader-focused presentation.
